The unique McLaren Vale blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot gained a reputation for drinkability and balance from the moment it was released. Matt Deller, Managing Director and Master of Wine at Wirra Wirra, notes that Church Block's success is due in part to its value for price point: "Church Block has always been well-known in the wine trade globally because of its style and consistency, a fine wine without the price tag.”
The Church Block story began with a blend of different grape varieties. In 1972, Greg Trott completed the restoration of the Wirra Wirra cellars, which he had bought in ruins. Encouraged by renowned winemaker Brian Croser, Trott adopted Cabernet Sauvignon for its international potential.
For the 50th vintage, Chief Winemaker Emma Wood, with the support of long-term Wirra Wirra winemaker Kelly Wellington, has gone back to basics in her approach to blending: "I was excited by the challenge of making this significant release. For us the task was to be ruthless in the parcel selection and leave out anything that didn’t achieve the balance or style that Church Block is famous for."
The result is an exceptional release of Church Block which clearly displays the Cabernet Sauvignon varietal leafy aromatic lift with a plush mid-palate and great length.
