The wine market in the Philippines has grown a lot in recent years. Why do you think that is?
One major driver is the increasing disposable income and evolving lifestyle preferences of Filipino drinkers. The result is a greater appreciation for premium and diverse wine selections. The burgeoning food and beverage industry, particularly in metropolitan areas like Manila, has also played a significant role by integrating wine into the dining culture and offering more sophisticated wine menus in restaurants and bars.
How are changing consumer preferences influencing the types of wine that are becoming popular in the Philippines, and what trends do you see shaping the market in the next few years?
Changing consumer preferences in the Philippines are driving the popularity of premium and diverse wines. Key trends shaping the market include a demand for high-quality wines, adventurous varietal exploration, an emphasis on food and wine pairing, an interest in sustainable and organic wines, and the growth of experiential events. Burgundy wines, in particular, show significant potential as some distributors in Manila focus more on this region.

Are there any specific wines or spirits you are particularly interested in at Vinexpo Asia this year?
I have my sights set on several wines and spirits that I'm thrilled to explore, especially new releases and underrated wine regions. I'm also excited about delving into Port wines, German Riesling, and Alsace wines.
When it comes to spirits, I'm eager to try innovative offerings, such as unique tequilas, whiskies, and gins. Vinexpo Asia is the ideal venue to discover the latest trends and innovations in both wines and spirits.
Filipino consumers are expanding their horizons when it comes to wine, and one of the factors driving the change, according to Cherry Dee Leguira, are wine education programmes and events, including those offered by the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET).
Such events not only give people a chance to taste new products, but also to learn from experienced sommeliers about the different regions the wines come from, and about the passion that goes into making them. Each wine, after all, has its own unique story.
Wine education programmes, in other words, help consumers gain knowledge and confidence, and in the case of the Philippines, they have especially boosted interest in wines from regions like Bordeaux, Champagne, Italy, and Napa Valley.
Consumers appreciate Italian wines for their versatility, and Napa wines for their bold, fruit-forward flavours, the General Manager at Vino Enoteca Manila Corp explained. Bordeaux, she went on to say, is valued for its complexity, and Champagne for its festive and refreshing qualities. Also, the tropical climate in the Philippines complements Champagne's crisp profile, enhancing its popularity.
